What To Serve With This Coleslaw Recipe

I can’t imagine going through all of summer without at least one big backyard barbecue party! Whether you’re celebrating the 4th of July or a casual Saturday evening with friends and family, you’ll need everything from co*cktails, desserts, entrees and side dishes to host an unforgettable backyard bash.

Here are some of our favorite recipes to serve with coleslaw:

 1. Chicken Marinade – for the juiciest most flavorful chicken EVER!
 2. Steak Marinade – turns any cut of steak into a work of art.
 3. Pineapple Punch – so delicious on a hot day!
 4. Steak Seasoning – for grilled steak perfection.
 5. Grilled Corn – if you’ve got the grill going, might as well make some corn!
 6. Chipotle Honey Barbecue Chicken
 7. Mini Strawberry Pies – the perfect dessert for a summer day.
 8. Pina Colada Fluff – part dessert, part salad, this easy recipe is always a hit!

Coleslaw Ingredients

With only seven inexpensive ingredients, side dish recipes don’t get much better than this! Truly, you’ll spend less money on these ingredients that serve 8 to 10 people than you would on a family sized portion of coleslaw from a restaurant. Not to mention, this homemade recipe is definitely better!

Let’s take a quick look at what you’ll need to make this coleslaw recipe:

 • shredded cabbage – I like to use a mix of green and purple cabbage for coleslaw – mostly because it looks pretty! Shredding your own cabbage allows you to cut the cabbage just how you like, thin or thick strips.
 • shredded carrots – We really love carrots so I’ll use up to 2 cups in our coleslaw, free free to use just 1 cup when you make it.

Looking for a shortcut? Buy pre-shredded cabbage and carrots!

Coleslaw Dressing

Here’s what you’ll need to make homemade coleslaw dressing:

 • mayonnaise – A regular or low fat mayonnaise will both work, just use whichever one you prefer.
 • apple cider vinegar – The slight acidity and tartness that this vinegar provides is essential to a well rounded coleslaw. However, in a pinch, white wine vinegar will also get the job done.
 • sugar – White granulated sugar is all you need to add the perfect amount of sweetness that balances with the acidic vinegar.
 • salt – Use kosher or flaky sea salt for best results.
 • pepper – Freshly ground black pepper always provides the most noticeable flavor.
 • celery seeds – this is an optional ingredient but one that my mom always used so I do too. You don’t need a lot to add a nice pop of flavor.

How to Make this Easy Colelsaw Recipe

Do you have a large bowl, a small bowl, salad tossers, and ten minutes of your time? Perfect! Then you have everything you need to make this incredibly easy, yet simple coleslaw.

Consider using a mandoline. It saves a ton of time and can really thinly slice the cabbage.

 1. Shred the cabbage and carrots. You’ll need about 8 cups of shredded cabbage for this recipe, give or take a cup.
 2. In a large bowl, toss together the green cabbage mix and purple cabbage until combined.Set aside while you prepare the dressing.

How To Make Coleslaw Dressing

 1. In a small bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, apple cider vinegar, sugar, salt, pepper and celery seeds if using.
 2. Next, pour the coleslaw dressing over the cabbage and toss it until well combined.
 3. Refrigerate the coleslaw for a good 30 minutes before serving – if you have time. It’s delicious immediately but the flavors are best if it can chill for a bit. Enjoy!

FAQS

How long will homemade coleslaw stay fresh?

In an airtight container in the refrigerator, coleslaw will stay fresh for about 2 days. Once it gets past 2 days, the cabbage loses its appetizing crunch and the consistency of the mayonnaise might become slimy. Avoid old coleslaw by enjoying it within the first 2 days.

Can I add anything else to this coleslaw recipe?

Yes, you most certainly can! While classic coleslaw is my personal favorite, there are plenty of additions you can toss into the mix to shake things up and make it your own. Diced pieces of apple, dried cranberries, fresh lemon juice, and sunflower seeds are all tasty additions to an already perfect side dish.

How do you make coleslaw for a large crowd?

This creamy coleslaw recipe can be doubled, tripled, whatever you need.

Trish’s Tips for the Best Homemade Coleslaw

 • Taking the time to shred fresh cabbage will give you the best results. Use a mandoline to make quick work of this task. Don’t have the time? No worries, buying pre-shredded cabbage or even a coleslaw mix totally works too.
 • Preparing the coleslaw in advance allows the flavors to develop and lets the cabbage and carrots soften just slightly. I like to chill for a good hour or up to 1 day in advance of serving.

FAQs

Why is KFC coleslaw so good? ›

KFC's coleslaw stands out because of its sweet and tangy dressing, but the slaw's texture is what makes it one of a kind.

What is the best pre made coleslaw? ›

With its nice, thick dressing, Walmart's deli coleslaw is the best creamy coleslaw of the bunch. The dressing is heavy on the mayo, which makes it the best coleslaw to slather on a burger or pulled pork sandwich, and the copious amounts of shredded carrot will contribute some crunch, too.

How do you reduce the bitterness in coleslaw? ›

You could also add grated apple, finely diced pineapple, or even a sprinkle of sugar. Just be careful not to be too heavy-handed — a little sweetness goes a long way. Bitterness is another common problem with coleslaw. Sweeteners like honey and fresh fruit should also help to counteract even a stubborn bite.

What can I add to store bought coleslaw to make it taste better? ›

Adding horse radish or onion or celery seeds or bacon bits or some other tasty flavors to make it your own is a really good idea.

Why did KFC stop selling coleslaw? ›

The fast food chain was forced to stop selling its coleslaw tubs when a supply issue meant the slaw would have to be served up without the dressing. “We are currently experiencing a supply issue with our KFC coleslaw dressing,” a KFC spokesperson said. The slaw is made up of cabbage and carrots coated in mayonnaise.

Is coleslaw healthy or unhealthy Why? ›

Yes, coleslaw can be healthy! The base of coleslaw is shredded vegetables (traditionally cabbage), so inherently coleslaw is vitamin- and fiber-packed and good for you. The issue is the dressing. Most traditional creamy coleslaw dressing is made with high fat ingredients like mayo and has sugar added too.

Why does my homemade coleslaw go watery? ›

Cabbage contains lots of water. Alton Brown suggests salting the cabbage and letting the water drain for two hours, then rinsing the cabbage and spinning it dry before dressing it. That purges the excess water out of the cabbage before it is dressed, so it doesn't get watery.

Why does coleslaw go bad so quickly? ›

Like the cabbage, these veggie add-ins can also become breeding grounds for bacteria when left unrefrigerated. Coleslaw dressing often includes vinegar that acidulates the mixture, making it a less hospitable environment for those pesky bacteria. But unfortunately, it's not enough to halt bacterial growth completely.

Should you wash bagged coleslaw? ›

Even if the bag says "prewashed" or "triple-washed," wash the greens yourself. Rinsing won't remove all bacteria but may remove residual soil. Prevent cross contamination by keeping greens away from raw meat.

Why does my homemade coleslaw taste bitter? ›

Cabbage Core:Issue: The core of the cabbage can be bitter, especially if it's not removed before shredding. Solution: Ensure that you remove the core of the cabbage before shredding it. Cut the cabbage in half, then cut out the triangular core from each half. Old Cabbage:Issue: Older cabbage may develop a bitter taste.

Is it better to make coleslaw the day before? ›

Coleslaw has the best texture and flavor the day it's made, but it still keeps well for several days in the fridge. If you're making this coleslaw more than a day ahead, don't skip the salting step above.

What spice takes away bitterness? ›

Spices mask bitter flavors, so don't be shy. Add some spicy peppers or powders to your cooking, or sprinkle some onto your dishes for a little bit of extra heat. Black pepper in particular has compounds that counteract bitterness. Some other great spices include cayenne, red pepper, paprika, and chili powder.

How do you doctor up store-bought coleslaw? ›

Carrots: Grated carrots add a touch of sweetness and a pop of color to your coleslaw. They're a common addition and provide a pleasant crunch. Bell Peppers: Sliced or diced bell peppers (red, green, or yellow) contribute a sweet and slight.

Why is my coleslaw bland? ›

Pre-made dressing is not fine.

Coleslaw needs a lot of seasoning in order to taste good, and bottled dressing never quite gets the job done. Homemade dressing is dead simple and tastes better.

How to pimp up shop bought coleslaw? ›

Try to use non-sweet relish as it would be way too sweet with the slaw. Add in a good teaspoon of fresh ground black pepper, a tablespoon of white vinegar and mix it all up and let it set at least an hour before you need it so the flavors develop together better. A nice sprinkle of celery seed also helps a lot.

Is KFC's coleslaw good? ›

I reviewed each side order from Kentucky Fried Chicken and ranked them all. The chain's green beans and coleslaw were unsurprisingly lackluster. The mac and cheese and biscuits were the best KFC sides I tasted. Visit Insider's homepage for more stories.

What is KFC's coleslaw made of? ›

There are only 3 vegetables: You can buy a bag of pre-shredded coleslaw and finely chop that, if you prefer. But keep in mind that true KFC Coleslaw only contains green cabbage, carrots, and onions, so don't use the packaged cabbage that has red cabbage or any herbs.

Why does KFC taste better cold? ›

When fried chicken starts to cool down, the skin contracts and bonds itself to the meat. This process causes the top part of the skin to separate slightly from the crust, which prevents moisture absorption and sogginess, allowing the breading to maintain its satisfying chomp.

What is the most unhealthy thing from KFC? ›

Worst: Extra Crispy

Here's where "crispy" is a code word for "steer clear." The extra crispy recipe is by far the least healthful of KFC's chicken options. A single breast will set you back 530 calories, 35 grams of fat, and 6 grams of saturated fat.
