Competition Time! Help me decide how to display my '89 suit.....

I'm finally close to finishing off the ultimate 89 suit. I'm planing on making two suits for myself. One for display and one for wearing should the need arise.

The question is how do I display my display suit? He'll be on a purpose built mannequin with a fully sculpted MK head (silicone, glass eyes etc.) but I plan on making a base/small diorama for it.

So what do I go for? Right now I'm in two minds. A battle damaged Batman, beaten up suit and face with the cathedral floorboards underfoot and a partial cathedral wall behind. Or a fully polished Batman standing in front of the Batcave Vault, with a faux stone/metal grid base.

Right now I'm leaning toward the former, but I really can't decide so I've decided to turn this into a competition.

I'd like participants to design my display, bearing in mind the above parameters. The design can be a sketch, digital painting or photoshop manip. I'm not looking for artistic excellence here, but rather inspiration and creativity. The more detail the better.

Post them here in this thread and the winner will recieve a slightly flawed (on the back of the shoulders, which would be completely covered by the cape) RD 89 Chest in urethane/foam.

A couple of things to help you. Personally I prefer this look rather than the cape down look.

And I really like this kind of pose

The Cave > Main chat > Competition Time! Help me decide how to display my \'89 suit..... (3)

However, I'm open to anything at this stage. The more inspiring the better.

If you need added inspiration, look here

Closing date will be April 1st 2011 and the winner will be announced on April 2nd. Only those with visual designs as previously described will be eligible for entry. Only 3 designs can be entered per participant.

Start designing and good luck!

Re: Competition Time! Help me decide how to display my '89 suit.....

Since you bring up the beaten up look of Batman towards the end of the movie. I would suggest making a kind of diorama to display your amazing batman.

The cathedral background comes to mind. I always loved when batman was standing next to or near a gargoyle.

Either way I drew a mockup of three different scenes you could possibly make out of foam, wood, and other easy to get materials. (excuse my poor drawings, I'm stuck at work and I drew these on scrap paper. I hope you get the idea though).

The Cave > Main chat > Competition Time! Help me decide how to display my \'89 suit..... (4)

So first I have the cathedral roof with gargoyle. A few feet off the wall you can basically create a ledge for the roof (which will serve as a pedestal as well) at the end of the ledge will be a gargoyle and on the other end of the ledge you can make some sort of tower/chimney design going up the wall (I drew this picture as if it were at a corner of the room)
If you need help picturing this - I envisioned the comic book cover as inspiration:
http://batman.wikia.com/wiki/Batman_(1989_Movie)_Comic_Adaptation
Bricks can be made of foam as well and painted with a grey, black and brown wash making it look like real stone.

The second picture is the cathedral bell diorama. All you need to do is build a half or quarter bell sticking out of the wall. Add a wood plank on the top and I even included the giant steel wheel which can be made of foam and painted a rusted steel color. The base of this diorama would just be wood making it really easy to make.

The last picture is a quick sketch of the batcave computers. Since you like the look - one of the most popular pictures of the 89 batman is him standing in front of the computers... You could just blow up this picture. Digitally sharpen the background and edit out Batman. You'll end up with a great wall poster to hang behind Batman.
http://posterpalace.com/images/ak/batman89lc1.jpg

I know of two people who have succesfully done the "poster" background for their displays and it came out wonderfully. Gino from the RPF for his Yoda and ...and... someone else who had a lifesized emperor done by Lord of the Props.

Hope that helps... I also would like to speak to you about 89 stuff. I have been working on a display, but now realize that my suit is just not going to cut it.

Re: Competition Time! Help me decide how to display my '89 suit.....

Alright, I'm going to see if I can do this through text without images (let me know if I need to clear something up visually)...

Firstly, I personally find that bases take away from full size pieces... I wouldn't do a base or back drop unless it's something simple like a cave wall... Maybe an armor vault...

A.)I like empty suits for display as well. It'd be cool to build the vault (with or without the door) and put the suit on a mannequin inside with an empty cowl. Then light accordingly.

B.)I'd love to see a Keaton Batman in one of his slightly leaning positions whether his arms are crossed or at his side. If you do this, the silicone head would fit beautifully! I feel that this posture, with one shoulder higher than the other is very Keaton in the batsuit and gives his Batman that great bit of attitude. I'm referring to the posture from the shot by the batmobile (not the one you pictured... if you need to see it I can find it, let me know)

C.) I't be very cool (and original) to pose it mid bat turn with legs slightly apart and focus a spot on him from above to "recreate" the scene outside the cathedral when the Helicopter's scoped him on the stairs.

D.) Any pose out of one of the Herb Ritz shots would be Awesome! AND, no background needed as they where shot in a blank background.

I feel like if you put the work into a believable silicone head and glass eyes and what not, a base would take away from this as it sets the piece in a certain spot and takes it "out" of the room... It'd be much cooler for it to appear as though Batman's stepped off the screen in 89 and is standing IN your house!

Thoughts?

Re: Competition Time! Help me decide how to display my '89 suit.....

Forgot to mention...

In most any of these poses, especially B or D you could change it up a little and drape the cape or fold it back over either shoulder... If you like it up one day and want to put it down the next, or do a variation... the possibilities are endless!

I REALLY can't wait to see what you've done with the suit! an '89 suit is my DREAM to put together and display. It's the only one I REALLY want to have a fully replica of...

Good ideas all fellas. Let's start seeing some more designs. I've updated the first post with rules and a pic of the prize on offer.

Newbat, I like the idea of a display base simply because I want to feel like the character and a portion of the movie have somehow turned up in my house. I want to put it on a pedestal - literaly!

You've done a nice job on that torso Paul, well done. You're getting a good skin for cold foam, are you using the self skinning low expansion stuff? or is it skinned with a layer of rubber first?

Cheers mate. Layer of rubber first, layer of rubber on the core and then the foam sandwiched inbetween.

Still don't like urethane though. The majority of these will be silicone.

Re: Competition Time! Help me decide how to display my '89 suit.....

Y'know - i forgot to mention my all time favorite part of the movie... When the batmobile drives into axis chemicals and blows the heck out of it...

Right after it you see batman standing next to the batmobile and a spotlight shining on him from above from the joker's helicopter.

I would suggest THAT scene. He is in the pose that you want. With the wind blowing from the helicoper you can pose him with his cape off to the side, one shoulder exposed and one not exposed..

For the background you can have a picture of axis chemicals in flames - blown up. Of course, it doens't have to be exactly to scale in the movie, you can have axis chemicals "farther off" in the background and thus have it printed smaller on the wall. The batmobile can be there too which is always a nice addition.

For the floor you can have a broken/worn concrete base made easily (it doesn't have to be very thick so it's not very heavy) That will blend into the concrete look from the background.

For lighting I would suggest having a track light or a spot light shine brightly on batman simulating the spotlight from the helicopter. Plus, the single track light will add to the dramatic lighting when all the other lights are turned off.

Last idea for the day - and possibly my most creative - after reading your first post, I realized that I just designed stuff that you wrote. I swear I didn't see it...

whatever - I suggest you forget the whole diorama scene altogether and just turn your entire wall into a giant light box!

Okay here's the idea -
1) You build a sheetrock wall approximately 2-3 inches off of your current wall. You need the 2-3 inches to install lighting behind it.
2) You carve a giant batsignal into the sheetrock and replace it with a transparent plexiglass.
3) You paint the whole wall a bluish greyish color to simulate the sky (like the final scene of batman)
3a) be sure to only lightly coat the plexiglass batsignal with paint as you need the light to shine through.

It'll end up looking like this: PLEASE NOTE - if you really want a base you can add the top of whatever building you want underneath batman...
(again, at work, so please excuse the sketch on scrap paper)
The Cave > Main chat > Competition Time! Help me decide how to display my \'89 suit..... (5)

Imagine this - normally the wall will just look like a dark bluish color. (perhaps you could even add sillouetes of buildings on the bottom (just paint them black it might look nice)

Then you flick a switch and all of a sudden out of no where the batsignal appears to glow out of the wall. It will have a bluish tint due to the paint over it (but that's actually movie accurate)
