The Expressivity of the Material Layer: Rethinking Matter with G. Simondon and M. Dufrenne, Venice Issues - On Matter, 2024
Andrea Zoppis
With this intervention, I would like to undertake a revaluation of the concept of matter from the philosophical perspective of Gilbert Simondon and Mikel Dufrenne, taking Merleau-Ponty's concept of Nature as an ontological framework. The aim is to rethink the expressivity proper to the material dimension of Nature, grasped from what Merleau-Ponty proposes as the ontological rehabilitation of the sensible.Taking as my starting point some Merleau-Pontian reflections on the material object, understood as a stream of relations, I will try to explain how his late philosophy lays the foundations for an ontological rethinking of our material involvement in the world. This perspective set the field within which certain resonances between Simondon's and Dufrenne's philosophy regarding the notion of matter can emerge.I will first dwell on Simondon's philosophy, pointing out how a reconsideration of the technical object, caught in its process of concretization, is inconceivable with a merely human understanding of agentivity. The technical modulation that man imposes on Nature is possible only because matter already carries its own contingent structure and energetic charge. To explore these aspects, I will consider Simondon's critique of hylomorphism elaborated in Individuation, and some passages from Du mode d'existence des objets techniques, in which the inexhaustible anchoring of objects to the natural dimension is highlighted.Thereafter, I will consider Dufrenne's philosophy, illustrating how his reflections are based on a pre-theoretical affective understanding of our relationship with materiality. In this perspective, I will consider some passages from Phénoménologie de l'expérience esthétique, in which the author describes the aesthetic objects as quasi-subjects, thus proposing a reconsideration of the material from the point of view of its inherent expressivity. In conclusion, by explaining some conceptual intersections that weave Simondon's and Dufrenne's approaches, I propose to reconsider matter as always affectively, sensibly, and thus expressively connoted. In this regard, to consider the expressivity of matter is to reconceive it as a generative source of meaning, thus questioning the very foundations of cultural practices. Therefore, the actual status of philosophy itself is at stake, making crucial a reassessment of our expressive involvement in the material layer of experience.

Convegno SISS 2024. Book of Abstract, 2024
Michela Giacomelli

Finding Room for Religion and Mysticism in Trans-/Posthuman Philosophies.(4H).The “horizontal” dimension of the posthumanist reflection on the equal dignity between all living beings – which together constitute “life” understood as “zoe”, without prevarications, hierarchies or privileges of species –, leads to what we could call an “immanent mysticism”. Within the posthuman “mysticism of immanence”, one can paradoxically find strong similaritiesor analogies with some mystical/religious experiences belonging to various traditions, even very distant in terms of place or time. Inside the neo-materialist framework of Transhumanism and, even more so, of Posthumanism – radically anti-hierarchical and anti-dualist –, we wantto highlight the points in common and the main differences with both the mystical doctrines of the Western tradition (Franciscanism, Meister Eckhart, the speculation about the doctrines of kenosis etc.) and some oriental religious traditions (Buddhism, Jainism, etc.). These comparativeanalyses raise many challenging questions: is a “not exclusively materialistic” posthumanism possible? To what extent can we speak of openess to a “spiritual” dimension within the many trans-/posthumanist proposals? This also raises the question of whether there is still room for theproprium of religious experience within trans/posthumanist movements and by virtue of what this room can find its own justification.
